Moving Tips

Here are a few tips to help make your move easier for you and our movers.  Please feel free to call us if you have any questions.

Boxes

When you pack your boxes, try to keep the weight under 50 pounds, and preferably under 30 pounds.  It will make the boxes easier for you and our movers to move safely.  Below are some guidelines for packing boxes:

Small Box

Small boxes are good to use for heavier items, such as books, CD’s, DVD’s, small tools, canned goods, etc.

Medium Box

Medium boxes are good for small kitchen appliances, toys, electronic equipment, etc.

Large Box

Large boxes are better for larger, lightweight items, such as stuffed animals, lamp shades, and clothing.  If packing a lamp shade, make sure it is protected so that if there is something else in the box, it doesn’t crush the shade.

Extra-large Box

Extra-large boxes are better for lightweight, bulky items, such as comforters, blankets, and towels, etc.

Dish Barrel Box

These boxes are double-walled for extra protection and are better for dishes and glassware.

Wardrobe Box

Wardrobe boxes are used to transport clothing on hangers.  These boxes can also be used to protect things like golf clubs and small chairs.

Other Boxes

There are other boxes available for packing items like mirrors, files, etc.

Marking Your Boxes

Make sure you mark your boxes so you know what is inside of them.  Mark at least two of the sides opposite one another, rather than the top.  Mark what room it is coming from.  Some people use colored stickers for each room so they know which boxes go together for individual rooms.  Then they put a colored sticker on the door of each room to make it quicker for the movers to place boxes in the correct rooms.  Keep an inventory of what you are moving.

“Open Me First” Boxes

You will want to know which boxes to unpack first in your new home, so create some “Open Me First” boxes.

Fragile Items

Mark boxes “FRAGILE” on the tops and sides of the boxes.

Stacking Boxes

If you are stacking boxes, be sure to put the heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top to avoid crushing boxes on the bottom of the stack.

Small Parts

If you are taking apart an item to be moved, tape screws and other small parts to the underside of the item so you will know where to find them.

Kitchen

Make sure you tell us which major appliances you will be moving, if any, and what floor they are on.

If you are moving a refrigerator or freezer, please remove all food from it before the move. We cannot move them with food in them.

Pack canned goods and cooking staples in smaller boxes so they are not too heavy.

Pack dishes and glasses so they travel safety, with proper padding. Dishes should be packed on their side, not flat.

Living/Family Room

Box electronics securely with packing peanuts.  Sometimes it even helps to double box them to protect fragile electronic components during transport.

Prior to the move, please disassemble any pole lamps that come apart.  Pack lamps and shades in boxes so they can be transported safely.

Items that are in things like a curio cabinet should be packed securely in boxes, with proper padding, and marked FRAGILE, as needed.

Dining Room

If you have a hutch, please make sure you pack any heavy or breakable items.  If you have lightweight tablecloths or linens in it, you can leave them in the drawers.

If for some reason a table needs to be disassembled, we will take it apart and put it back together at your new home.

Bedroom

We will take your beds apart for you and reassemble them at your new home.  It saves work for you and makes it easier for us.

You do not need to empty bureau drawers if you just have clothing or lightweight linens in them. Please pack any heavy or breakable items.

Office

Please disconnect computers, printers, and faxes, etc. Due to the nature of this equipment, we cannot set them up for you at your new home.  Box whatever you can to best protect these items.

File cabinets tend to be heavy when full, so please box the files prior to your move.

Laundry Room

Please try to disconnect washers and dryers.  If you need assistance, we will be happy to disconnect them for you and connect them at your new home.

Paintings and Pictures

It is best to bubble-wrap or box your paintings and pictures so that they travel securely.

Specialty Items

Please let us know if you have a piano, pool table, hot tub, or heavy safe.  Since these items require special handling, we need to know in advance so we have the proper equipment with us and assign the appropriate number of movers to the job.

Important or Sentimental Items

No matter who handles your move, it is always a good idea to move valuable or non-replaceable items yourself.  Pack items like family heirlooms, jewelry, hobby collections, photographs and personal videos/DVD’s, address books, wills, stocks, insurance policies and other important papers and keep them with you.  You may also want to pack a suitcase with items such as medications, eyeglasses, toiletries, and any medical equipment, such as a C-Pap machine, and a few changes of clothes and take it with you so you will have everything you need for the first few days in your new home.

Things We Cannot Transport

We cannot legally transport hazardous or flammable items, such as oil, propane, kerosene, paint thinner, varnish, fireworks, and ammunition, etc.

Thank you for visiting our website. We look forward to handling your move for you!
